What makes a product organic?
A product which is labelled organic is formulated using all natural ingredients, free from sodium lauryl sulfates, parabens, genetic modification and petroleum. According to Australian Certified Organic, a product labelled "organic" should contain 70-80% organic ingredients. Some organic products are ‘certified organic' which means the ACO or OFC have accredited the product. In order for a product to receive a certified organic status, it must meet the guidelines outlined by a governing body. Organic products can include make up, beauty products and hair care products made using eco-friendly, biodegradable ingredients. This does not mean, however, that people who are prone to skin rashes or allergies will not experience a reaction when using an organic product. You must still entertain caution when using any new product for the first time.
Hard facts
Natural ingredients ordinarily must go through some stages of processing and chemical modification in order to preserve the product (because who wants bacteria growing in their lip balm, seriously!) all organic products whether they are certified or not, have some processed elements to prevent get creepy crawlies from living in your foundation. There are a number of organic certification groups and each of them require different criteria, there is no universal standard because a science-based standard does not yet exist. Organic foods on the other hand require more strict guidelines.
Why choose organic?
Your skin absorbs up to 60% of what you apply on it, which is why it's important not to load your body with synthetic chemicals that could do harm to you in the long term. Pregnant women might switch to more organic products to protect their unborn child. Organic products are generally less harmful to the environment when flushed through our water system (products such as soaps, shampoos and conditioners).
Organic products
You can find everything from blush to hand cream with the organic label. Organic continues to dominate the market and natural cosmetics are becoming more desired and widely available in shopping markets.
